The Iowa Political Market is a menu-driven, real-money, computerized futures market where contract payoffs are based on real-world events such as political outcomes, companies' earnings per share (EPS), and stock price returns. Currently their markets include political markets based on the 1996 Republican National Convention and the 1996 U.S. Presidential Election; earnings markets based on reported quarterly earnings per share for IBM and KMart; and returns markets based on stock price returns in the Entertainment Industry and for Minnesota firms. All the software and hardware torun these markets are housed at the University of Iowa. Traders connect to the market through Internet or by modem.
